The rain the last few days has been nice, but you know it’s just a drop in the bucket of water our communities and our rivers need. In fact, 98 percent of the state is still in drought and 21 Texas reservoirs are less than 25 percent full. Remember Medina Lake and other bodies of water! Our rivers are still suffering. Our population is set to double in the coming decades, and the state has already permitted more water to be withdrawn from many of our rivers than is actually in them. Meanwhile, much of the water sucked from our rivers is just plain wasted. The Legislature is considering measures that could help cut waste, boost conservation and put Texas on the path toward a more sustainable water future. A conference committee is currently deliberating on HB 4--a bill which would establish a new $2 billion water infrastructure fund. A House version of the bill sets aside 20 percent of the funding for water conservation while a Senate version--which we prefer--sets aside as much as 30 percent. A bill to stop HOAs from preventing their members from installing water-wise landscaping is currently stuck in a committee and the deadline to get out is Friday. Please contact your legislators today and urge them to stand up for our rivers and support these water conservation measures.
